Doug True and the True's
Motorsports Team; Trying to make the best of things and hopes to be able to
run a full schedule in 2006
By ASA Late Model Series Staff
Lexington, Michigan (02/02/2006): Several words describes Doug True and
the True's Motorsports Racing Team throughout the last two seasons in the
ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts; Dedication,
Loyalty, and Perseverance!
No matter the odds or the obstacles thrown their way, True and his crew
continue to strive and continue to show they belong in the ASALMS. It
doesn't just include his performances on the track either! Last season on
two occasions, True and his team took things a step farther and offered help
to two fellow competitors who were in a time of need!
During practice for the Gibson Chevrolet 100 at the Illiana (IN) Motor
Speedway, Mike Satkowiak, who three weeks earlier won his first ever feature
during the Snap-On Tools 100 at the Calhoun County (MI) Speedway (Now
Springport Motor Speedway), destroyed his car in the first practice session
at the ½ mile semi-banked paved oval.
The True's Motorsports Team wasted no time in unloading their back-up car
for Satkowiak so the Kawkawlin, Michigan driver could at least attempt to
make the event! Ironically enough, in the final 2005 points standings,
Satkowiak would finish a single point ahead of True in 13th place in the
final standings! 1682-1681.
Then during the ASALMS Season Championships held during National Short
Track Championships final practice session at the Rockford (IL) Speedway,
another fellow competitor found some bad luck. Landon Cassill, who was in
the hunt for a Top Five finish in the final points standings, destroyed his
mount in turn four.
Again the True's Motorsports Team immediately unloaded the back-up car for
Cassill so the Fairfax, Iowa teenager could at least attempt to compete!
Although Cassill fell short of his goal, he wouldn't have even had the
chance if it weren't for the True's Motorsports Team.
Now True and his Dowagiac, Michigan based team are in a quandary of their
own. With limited finances and limited resources, the True's Motorsports
Team is facing the possibility of not running the full season of events
within the ASALMS Challenge Division nor a full season in the all new
Northern Division. Which was their plans for the upcoming season.
Over the last two seasons, True has accomplished a rare feat in the ASALMS
as the Dowagiac, Michigan driver has at least started in the last 27 events
since the beginning of the 2004 season! Tied for second all-time with
Cassill and Jack Smith. True's 27 appearances are more impressive for the
fact that he has started all 27 of those events! The highest consecutive
start streak in the ASALMS history! That streak is in jeopardy!
"2005 was such a rough year from our stand point." Stated True as he
talked about last season and his hopes for the 2006 campaign. "After Cricket
(James Butler, his former teammate) left, we really struggled, we had to
refinance the house just to finish the season up. We thought that maybe if
we kept going, we'd help ourselves out." True continued. "It does have a lot
to do with money, not in the car really, but we couldn't and really still
can't, go buy tires to practice or go out and test."
True looks ahead to the 2006 season and is in fact preparing two cars for
the upcoming campaign "In case a miracle happens" and funding comes through
in time for the season. "I've been doing this since I was seven years old,
racing is part of my life, and I don't know any different." True continued.
All the ASALMS stuff we have on our schedule is within a couple of hours
drive and one day deals, that's all we can do right now, unless some backing
comes in."
The soon to be 30-year-old is also tied for 12th all-time in career Top
Five finishes with Ryan Carlson and fellow Westside Michigander, Brent Hook.
True is by himself in seventh place all-time in Top 10 Finishes with 11,
just two behind 2005 Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year, Brian Campbell
and multi-time feature winner, Jack Smith, who both have 13.
"We haven't always seen eye to eye but I tell you what, no one is as hard
working, as dedicated, and as loyal to the ASALMS as Doug True and his whole
team." Stated ASALMS Founder/President, Ron Varney. "I sincerely hope he can
get the funding to run with us full-time and continue his streak of
consecutive starts. I know how hard that is to do and I sincerely hope he'll
be with us in Nashville, he has as good a shot to win that race as anybody
else! Varney added.
During the 2005 season, True led 11 laps during the 2005 season at the
9/11 Tribute 100 at the Baer Field (IN) Speedway on September 11, 2005. True
recorded six Top 10 finishes included a season high eighth place finish on
two occasions during the season.
His first eighth place showing came on May 27, 2005 at the Madison (WI)
International Speedway and again on July 2, 2005 at the Calhoun County (MI)
Speedway. He finished just one point out of 13th place in the final
standings behind Calhoun County feature winner, Mike Satkowiak in the 14th
slot in the final points tallies.
There is slight hope however for the True's Motorsports Team for the 2006
season with having two cars in his stable, he is looking at the option of
renting the second car out as a way to finance the team. "I haven't ever
done a rental deal before so I don't know what pricing is realistic, but
what I have come up with and mentioned to a few people is that it would
cover race tires and crew as we have been working in the past." True
offered.
"We could probably do some group pricing, less travel costs for events
closer to home for me. I'm looking at all types of options right now in case
no backing comes in for us, we still need a lot of funding to make that
happen!" True ended.
If the backing doesn't follow through, True is looking at a limited 2006
schedule with the ASALMS beginning with the televised ASALMS Challenge
Division event at the Madison (WI) International Speedway on Saturday May
27th. After Madison, True is looking at about 8-10 more ASALMS Challenge and
Northern Division shows scattered throughout the season while also staying
close to home in Michigan and running select events with the M.I.S.S. Super
Pro Series.
His first season with the ASALMS in 2004 and it was a breakout season for
Doug as he racked up an impressive five top five showings with a season high
third on two occasions. At Lake Erie (PA) Speedway and again at Berlin (MI)
Raceway. Overall, he recorded five top 10s enroute to a fourth place finish
in the final point's standings.
Doug began his career in Go-Karts in 1983. He captured his initial track
championship in 1990. He started racing Late Models in 1997 competing at the
quarter-mile oval of South Bend (IN) Motor Speedway. After completing
college, Doug began racing on a regular basis in 1999. He has gained
experience at Michigan's Berlin Raceway, Kalamazoo Speedway, and Thunder
Valley Speedway. Doug has also seen time at the Indiana tracks of Plymouth
Speedway and South Bend.
