Drew Herring Taco Bell 300 Race Report

Martinsville , VA – On October 5, 2003 Drew Herring the 16 year old from Benson , North Carolina had his first taste of Martinsville Speedway.

Sunday was the first time for Drew in the Taco Bell 300, the Daytona 500 of Nascar Late Model Stock Racing at the Martinsville Speedway in Virginia .  He qualified 26th overall out of 86 cars vying for a chance at the top 20 positions that were taken on qualifying times to race in the 42 car field.  The competition was stiff was the chance to at the $15,000 first Place Check.
Drew’s qualifying position of 26th would require him to try to advance into the 200 lap feature through one of four 25 lap heat races.  He needed to be in the top five to advance.

Drew started on the outside of the front row in heat number two and finished 2nd securing a starting position of 26th in the big show.  After the green flag was waved Drew started passing cars and had advanced to the 12th position at the mandatory caution flag that was waved at lap 100 to allow cars to pit for fuel and take on two new tires. Quickly after the race was restarted Drew passed the 11th and the 10th place cars to take over the 9th position where he would ride until lap 173 when he looped his car in turn one trying to avoid a wreck in front of him.

Drew restarted in the 16th position after the spin and was able to work his way back to 11th before being spun on the checkered flag lap by the 10th place car while trying to make the pass on the inside.  Drew would finish in 18th position after the last lap altercation. Drew enjoyed racing at Martinsville and is looking forward to his next race there.
